She may be playing in her fourth World Cup and she may be sixth in the all time list of ODI appearances in women’s cricket, but the appetite of Anjum Chopra to help India win the ICC Women’s World Cup remains as strong as ever.
She is already dreaming of helping India win its third consecutive ICC title, with the men’s teams having won the ICC World Twenty20 2007 and the ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup 2008.
“It would make us feel great, as winning always makes you feel good. The boys have done so well in recent events so if we are able to do something in our sport, it will complete a hat-trick, and it would give a great boost to women’s cricket back home as well which is very important back home,” said Chopra.
“Winning a World Cup has always been a dream and if we are able to achieve it then it is going to be great but our next match is the most important.”
Her side’s next match will see the two unbeaten sides in Group B come face to face and India will be determined to gain revenge for its 4-0 series defeat to England last year.
And Chopra will be hoping to repeat her performance from the Women’s World Cup 2005 when her 64 not out against England earned her the Player of the Match Award in a seven-wicket victory.
“The England game is an important one for us and whoever plays better cricket on that day will be victorious. I am looking forward to the match,” said Anjum.
“Their batters have been doing especially well, but the whole England team have being doing well in the last year – the batters, the bowlers, everybody. They are playing well as a unit.
“We know their players, they know us and everybody will be aware it is a World Cup game and you will be carrying points through to the Super Sixes.”
Chopra is also excited that the game at North Sydney Oval on Tuesday will be broadcast to a global audience of over 200 countries.
“It sets women’s cricket on a different platform as it is very important for Indian women’s cricket to do well in this tournament,” she said.
“Once it is on television in so many countries the sport will become global and encourage more women and girls to play the game.”
